Perfect World window freezing in the background? Keep all running

In Perfect World, a window without focus stops drawing and looks frozen. Why it happens and how rendernofocus keeps every multibox window rendering.

Published on

Anyone who multiboxes Perfect World knows the scene: you click the leader’s window and the follower’s window freezes. The character is still in the game, but the picture stops until you switch back to it.

Why the background window freezes

The PW client saves resources: when a window loses focus, it stops drawing the screen. With one account nobody notices. With several, it gets hard to keep an eye on the followers, see their HP or tell whether one got stuck on a wall.

The rendernofocus parameter

The client accepts a launch parameter called rendernofocus, which keeps the window drawing even without focus.

To use it when you open the game yourself:

  1. Right-click elementclient.exe and create a shortcut.
  2. In the shortcut properties, in the Target field, after the closing quote of the path, add: startbypatcher rendernofocus
  3. Open your accounts through that shortcut.

On servers that require starting the game from their own launcher, the direct shortcut may not log in. In that case, check whether the launcher has a similar option.

In PW Overlay

In PW Overlay it is a single switch, under Settings → Game → Keep rendering without focus. It applies the next time you open your accounts, and every window starts with rendernofocus.

How heavy it is

Every window drawing all the time uses your graphics card and processor. If your PC struggles:

  • Use a smaller resolution on the followers’ windows.
  • Lower the graphics quality on the accounts in the back.
  • Turn it on only when you need to watch the followers, like in dungeons.
